Manoella specializes in teaching reading, comprehension, essay writing, study skills, and test prep (SSAT, HSPT). She also teaches number sense and elementary math including fractions, decimal calculation (money), Algebra, Geometry, and telling time. While Manoella teaches enrichment, her students often include those who are far behind their cohort, struggling with math, reading, or to recall their reading, with ADHD, dyslexia, expressive language, or auditory processing disorders. Her pupils have ranged in age from kindergarten to adulthood, from those with mild learning differences to those recovering from stroke and brain injury.
Manoella has a BA in Comparative Literature from Stanford University and a certificate in Waldorf education for grades 1-8. She is fully trained in Lindamood Bell modalities where she worked for 5 years and has more than 12 years experience in small group and one-on-one instruction, including seven years working with Special Education students in the San Francisco Unified School District. Manoella is bilingual in Spanish.
Manoella is creative in her interventions and meets students where they are by using their particular strengths, interests, and learning styles to address their areas of growth. They are never far from her thoughts and she meditates on her pupils nightly to gain insight on how best to serve them so they may fully develop their capacities.
Manoella experiences a frisson of true joy when a student has a “magical learning moment.” She has a calm, relaxed manner leavened with a goofy wit and shares self-deprecating anecdotes to show students they are not alone in their daily challenges. Manoella believes that when you can laugh together imposing tasks become less onerous.
Manoella's artistic skill set includes storytelling, performance poetry, knitting, sewing, embroidery, jewelry making, painting, charcoal/pastels, paper making, cooking, baking, and gardening. Most especially Manoella loves singing the alto parts of polyphonic Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque choral compositions. She dabbles in aromatherapy and practices yoga, mindfulness meditation, and nonviolent communication.
"Dear Manoella, I appreciate all the effort you put into me this summer to help me read. I also appreciate that I can read now. I could not have done this without you." -Student
