Michael
With a combination of patience and curiosity, Michael meets children right where they are so that they may feel comfortable and confident in their ability to approach challenging academic material. He began tutoring students, in ages ranging from elementary through high school, more than a decade ago, and he especially enjoys helping children excel in math, science, and a logical approach to writing. Michael delights in the one-one setting, an ideal context to share with students in the inherent joy of learning and discovery. He finds this environment optimal for teaching such skills as organization and time management, important executive functioning tasks. Michael also loves the aspect of mentorship that can arise in the context of tutoring relationships--taking an interest in the rest of a student's life and making the academic learning relevant to a student's personal life.
Michael graduated from Brown University in 2008 with degrees in Mathematics and Philosophy. Upon graduation, his love of wisdom and his desire to know himself more intimately led him on a journey of meditation and awakening. He devoted himself to the practice of mindfulness meditation, spending more than a year of combined time in solo and group silent retreats. Integrating his contemplative pursuits with worldly, everyday life, Michael enjoys bringing the fruits of his years of inner work, and continued inner development, into the relationships he has with children. He has worked as a teacher the last several years, and he finds his students to be some of his greatest teachers.
Michael loves tutoring students of all ages, and he delights in the “aha” moments when, through careful guidance, abstract ideas become more concrete.
"Michael has a very calm and supportive demeanor. As a current math teacher, he has both command of the subject while being patient with the learning process of the student." - Parent, Mill Valley Middle School
